Why these months?
Two things decide your odds on the Green River: flow and season. You need the river in its fishable-flow band — so a freestone in spring runoff is out no matter how good the hatch would be, while a dam-fed tailwater holds shape year-round. On top of that, the hatches and water temperatures line up best in September and October and April and May, which is why those months edge out the rest. The Green River's season runs year-round tailwater; prime september–october & spring.
The Green below Flaming Gorge Dam is the famous emerald tailwater of Red Canyon — water so clear you can sight-fish trophy browns and rainbows holding over a cobbled bottom 15 feet down. The "A" section from the dam to Little Hole holds thousands of trout per mile and is one of the most photographed pieces of trout water in America, fishable year-round on midges, BWOs, cicadas, and hoppers.
Where to fish the Green River
The 7-mile Little Hole trail follows the A section with wade access the whole way; most anglers float it with a guide and hop out to wade the flats and riffles. Releases from Flaming Gorge set the level — sight-fishing is best in the lower, clearer end of the prime band.
