Why these months?

Two things decide your odds on the Madison River: flow and season. You need the river in its fishable-flow band — so a freestone in spring runoff is out no matter how good the hatch would be, while a dam-fed tailwater holds shape year-round. On top of that, the hatches and water temperatures line up best in September and October and July and August, which is why those months edge out the rest. The Madison River's season runs year-round below hebgen; prime july–october.

The Madison below Hebgen Lake is the quintessential Montana trout river — fifty miles of riffly, wadeable "walk-and-wade" water that fishes more like a giant spring creek than a freestone. Hebgen Dam buffers the worst of the runoff, so the upper river holds shape and clarity when nearby freestones are chocolate milk. Dense brown- and rainbow-trout populations and legendary salmonfly and caddis hatches make it one of the most fished pieces of trout water in the West.

Where to fish the Madison River

The "$3 Bridge" to Lyons stretch is classic wade water; below Quake Lake the river braids and pockets. When flows climb in spring runoff, drop down to the dam-buffered upper reaches or fish a guided float that reads the clearer seams.
